Crystal Castles is made up of Ethan Kath, and Alice Glass. Since their inception they have created some of the most mind bending uptempo, thrashy electronic music that has ever existed. Blending their sensibilities from the synth saturation of the 1980’s and the thrash punk of the same era, this band has created a tour de force of sound that is captured well on albums but truly comes to life when they perform.
In fact their performances have often been compared to punk shows with Alice Glass’ amazing abundance of energy powering the experience. While they’re definitely renowned for their tempo, and aggression, their albums remain fantastic, and have been universally lauded by critics the world over. Simply naming their albums “Crystal Castles”, the press and world at large has come to know them represented sequentially as “Crystal Castles” “II” and “III”
Each album represents a shift for the group, with the first album relying heavily on chiptune, and classic videogame samples paired up with punchy 80’s beats. While “II” was more dark and brooding, and added a sense of menace to the groups music that hadn’t existed before. Finally with “III” the group explored the idea of using electronic music as a means of expression aggression, confrontation, and protest. We can only guess what they’ve got up their sleeve next.
