Born October 5, 1987 in Los Angeles, California, Dillon Hart Francis is a pioneer of moombahton and moombahcore. Though he’s only been getting recognition in the electronic music scene for a little over three years, his hard work and innovations have paid off in bulk.
Francis credits his parents with his work ethic, which has gotten him where he is today. He got his first break when he got Diplo’s attention and then collaborated with him on “Que Que”. In 2010 he released his first EP, Swashbuckler, on Play Me Records.
In the last three years, Francis has released work on several labels, including Mad Decent, OWSLA, and Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records. In 2012, with the release of his — EP Something, Something, Awesome — he became the first moombahton producer to hit #1 on Beatport’s Top 5 Releases chart.
Later in 2012, he set off on the Wet & Reckless North American tour, then supported the British electro trio Nero on their Welcome Reality tour and Flux Pavilion on his Standing on a Hill tour.
Then, this year, he announced a new headlining U.S. and Canada tour, “Wurld Turr” and the release of his his first full-length album. When he’s not on tour or in the studio, though, Francis is a bit of a recluse. He says he doesn’t go out much when he’s home in L.A., and he’s not much good with relationships.
His take on cats versus dogs on the internet — in an interview with L.A. Weekly — pretty much sums up his work ethic and his hermit-like social life. He says, “I love dogs too… but cats rule the Internet. The reason people like cats more than dogs on the Internet is because cats have more of their own personality. Dogs are more of a companion. Cats are just by themselves… and do their own thing,”
Doing his own thing, like a cat on the internet, has gotten Dillon Francis to the top of the world in electronic music innovation, and he’s just getting started.
