Born on April 19, 1971, Ali Shirazinia, generally recognized by his professional name “Dubfire”, is an Iranian American techno and house DJ in addition to being a music producer. Just before his solo vocation, Dubfire was one-half of the four-time nominated and Grammy Award-winning combo Deep Dish. Dubfire’s musical brand is significantly distinct from Deep Dish, composed of techno as opposed to progressive house.
Throughout his youth, Ali Shiazinia honed his musical tastes in mainly traditional Hip-Hop, jazz/rare groove, dub-reggae, new-wave and industrial and was likewise impacted by the neighborhood punk scene along with the music of Washington DC-based groups which include Minor Threat and Fugazi. Dubfire discovered a nearby record shop named Yesterday And Today Records, where he grew to become familiar with the sounds of musicians like Ministry, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Jesus & Mary Chain, Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound, Nitzer Ebb and Einsturzende Neubauten.
Back in 1991, along with fellow DC resident Sharam Tayebi, Dubfire shaped “Deep Dish”. Deep Dish was DJ and production combo that became noteworthy for their production and DJ sets. Deep Dish produced heralded dance classics starting with the 1995 remix of De’Lacy ‘Hideaway,’ and went to work together with a diverse variety of brands in rock, pop and electronica. Dubfire and Sharam Tayebi created Deep Dish Records, and also continued to earn a Grammy in 2002 due to their remix of Dido’s “Thank You” alongside a number of other high-profile accolades. Pursuing their achievements as Deep-dish, both Shirazinia and Tayebi began to make and DJ independently.
In 2007, Dubfire declared the kick-off of his own new record label, Science Technology Digital Audio, commonly known as SCI TEC. He put the label up as an avenue to produce his songs and started silently releasing a chain of outstanding songs. 2007’s electro-tech song ‘Roadkill’ moved Dubfire ever closer to techno feeling, as the stripped-back ‘RibCage’ had become the very first launch on Loco Dice’s celebrated Desolat label, getting an immediate classic.
With every launch, Dubfire’s reputation and accolades leaped forward. A couple of top ten songs in the 2007 Resident Advisor’s 100 Most Charted Records, IDJ Magazine’s Player of the Year back in 2008, nominations for Beatport’s Best Minimal Artist and Best Techno Artist in ’08 and ’09, front layouts on many music publications, BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix, mixes for Mixmag and DJ Magazine – the honors and triumphs came one after the other.
In the ’09 season, Dubfire made a remix on Danton Eeprom and Radio Slave’s ‘Grindhouse’ which exemplified all that Dubfire represents right now: dark rhythms, outstanding sound, and technical splendor. It intersected virtually every style and was the pinnacle of the distinctive audio that DJ Magazine dubbed “jet-black, polished chrome techno.” Groove and Raveline Magazine referred to it as the Number 1 Remix of the Year.
Nevertheless, Dubfire’s current work has witnessed him co-produce monitors with recognized British electronic music talent Underworld, to produce two-disc collection with Loco Dice for Cocoon, extra remixes of Plastikman content, along with a collaborative venture with highly regarded music maker Oliver Huntemann. All through his amazing voyage, Dubfire’s SCI TEC label continues to increase and it currently is the place to find a lineup of internationally established musicians.
