First held in April of 2011, Lollapalooza Chile is an annual festival held in Santiago’s O’Higgins Park. It’s based on the popular United States Lollapalooza festival, and though there are now several throughout the world, Chile was the first to host a Lollapalooza event outside of the United States.
Over 100,000 people have come to this festival every year since it was first held, and they’re treated to alternative, punk, hip hop and heavy metal bands both from Chile and around the world. The festival is run by a Chilean production company Lotus Productions, and is heavily influenced by Perry Farrell, the frontman for Jane’s Addiction.
The 2014 festival will be held on March 29th and 30th and will include acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, Imagine Dragons, Nine Inch Nails, Zedd, Cage the Elephant, Fat Pablo, Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, Kid Cudi, Hoppo!, Savages, and We Are Grand.
While many come to see the internationally acclaimed bands, there is also a strong platform for Chilean rock, and in fact local bands have historically drawn some of the largest crowds. Feature bands of past and future include Antia Tijoux, Javiera Mena, Joe Basconcellos, Fernando Milagros, and Los Jaivas.
