With the exception of 2003, the Melt! Festival has been held every year since 1999, which makes it one of the longest running electronic festivals in Germany. Billed as electronic meets rock, festival-goers can appreciate a unique blend of pop, rock, electronic, and house music.
While the music is the main draw, the location is part of what makes it such a unique experience – it’s held in a huge open-air museum with huge machines from the 20th Century. These machines weigh thousands of pounds and are many stories high, and add an industrial feel to the already free-flowing music.
2013’s festival brought in more than 25,000 music fans, and the 2014 edition is expected to be even more popular. Past acts have included Goldie Underworld, Franz Ferdinand, The Streets, Oasis, Pet Shop Boys, Chicks on Speed, Bjork, Editors, The Knife, and Scissor Sisters.
The 2014 Melt! Festival will features more than 30 acts, and headliners include Portishead, Lulu James, Dixon, Milky Chance, and the Mighty Oaks. Like many European festivals, camping permits are available, and grills are allowed, so once the music is silenced for the night, expect long, late after-parties at campsites around the grounds.
