Sziget Festival is one of the largest multicultural events in all of Europe and has been going strong since 1993. Last year attendance was close to 400,000 and people from 70 countries were represented. It takes place on a private island in the heart of Budapest, and is a total festival-holiday experience with ongoing music, parties, and many unique activities.
Also known as the Island of Freedom, Sziget is essentially numerous festivals in one. The party runs for a full week, with more than 50 program venues and 200 programs happening every day. Bands run the gamut from internationally known pop and rock stars, to electronic music, to folk, jazz, and even classical music.
While music is the focus, there are plenty of other cultural programs at the festival. Theater, circus and exhibitions are held every day, and a beach section allows fans to chill and take in the Danube. Roma music and a gay and lesbian venue are two examples of special events that take place among the beautiful historic buildings of Budapest.
The full lineup for 2014 has not been released, but several incredible acts have been confirmed: Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis, Queens of the Stone Age, Skillrex, Placebo, Calvin Harris, Imagine Dragons, Jake Bugg, Bastille, and London Grammar.
