“I’ve been deep into electronic music my entire life. The first records I ever owned were ‘Fat of Land’ by the Prodigy and ‘Come to Daddy’ by Aphex Twin. Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails were also early influences. I’ve been dabbling in making electronic tracks on programs like Fruity Loops since I was 14 years old”-Skirillex
Sonny John More better known as Skirillex is an emerging electronic musician and singer who started his music career in 2004 as a lead singer for an American rock band “From first to last”. Before starting his career as a solo singer in 2007, Calvin recorded two studio albums for the rock band including the band’s debut album “Dear Diary, my teen angst has a body count” released in 2004 and “Heroine” released in 2006.
After recovering from a successful vocal surgery, Skirillex officially resigned from the band to start his solo career. “Equinox”, “Signal” and “Glow worm” were the first demos released on my space by Moore after quitting the band. Moore gave his first solo performance in 2007 at a local art building alongside Carol Robbins, a harpist where he played several original tunes.
In 2009 Moore released an extended play, “Gypsy hook” which was a digital extended play featuring four remixes and three songs.
Moore started his production career as Skirillex in 2008. He performed and produced at different clubs in the Los Angeles. “My name is Skirillex” was the first digital EP released on 7 June 2010 that was available for download. In the same year Moore worked with a UK based band “Bring me the Horizon” on their third studio album “There is a hell, believe me I’ve seen it. There is a heaven, let’s keep it a secret”. He released his second extended play later in the same year, under the title “Scary monsters and nice spirits”.
A song from this EP, “kill everybody” was used by SCEA studio for their PS III game “Unchartered 3: Drake’s deception”.
Later on in 2011, another EP “More monsters and Spirits” was released on an online music store Beatport. The EP included three original tracks, including “first of the year Equinox” and two new versions of “Ruffneck”. In the same year he announced his label “OWSLA”.
In addition to the immediate success of his EP “Scary monsters and nice spirits” Skirillex has ventured in different areas of music. Aside from being a singer, music producer and a DJ, Skirillex has also made a name for himself as a remixing artist. He has successfully produced remixes for some famous artists like “Rock that body” by Black Eyed Peas and “Bad romance” and” Alejandro” by Lady Gaga and “In the kill” by La Roux.
Raving about himself Skirillex said,
“Skirillex can be anything I want it to be. There are so many different avenues for music now. Video games, movie scores- the possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to be a part of it”.
