Released on April 3rd, 2012, ‘Evolution’ is the sixth studio album by German Electronic Dance Music (EDM) DJ and music producer Paul Van Dyk. The album features fourteen songs including five singles. In this album, Paul Van Dyk has collaborated with some International music artists; including Austin Leeds, Adam Young, Plumb, Sue McLaren, Arty, Sarah Howells, Ummet Ozcan, Tyler Michaud, Fisher and Fieldwork. Most of these collaborations are with fellow music producers due to which the album showcases more instrumental tracks than vocal tracks.
The disc opens with ‘Symmetries’. It is a classic progressive melody featuring fellow DJ Austin Leeds. ‘The Ocean’ is the next track to follow. Backed by strong vocals, the song featuring Arty is a beautiful, moving operatic trance number. The third track of the album ‘Eternity’ is inevitably the most polarizing number of this album. The track showcases epic vocals from Adam Young (Owl City) and is the third single of ‘Evolution’. ‘Verano’ was released as the fourth single of the album. The song features Adam Young and is one of the most energetic songs featured on this album.
The fifth track of the album, ‘I Don’t Deserve You’, is a beautiful emotional track featuring Plumb. The song was released as the album’s fifth single. The sixth track of ‘Evolution’, ‘The Sun after Heartbreak’, is a soft instrumental number featuring Sue McLaren and Arty. The next track of the album, ‘Rock this’ is an upbeat track credited exclusively to Paul Van Dyk. ‘Dae Yor’ featuring Ummet Ozcan and ‘A wonderful Day’ featuring Giuseppe Ottaviani are standard trance numbers featured on this album. ‘We Come Together’ featuring Sue McLaren is another energetic and violently bassy number featured on this album. The track is a fusion of trance and techno music.
‘Everywhere’ featuring Fieldwork (the fourth single of the album) and ‘If You Want My Love’ featuring Michelle Leonard are typical Paul Van Dyk tracks featured on this album. The final track of the album, ‘Heart Stops Beating’, is a beautiful track showcasing incredible vocals of Sarah Howells.
The album received mixed reviews from music critics and sure is a treat for all music lovers especially Paul Van Dyk’s fans.
It is difficult to believe that ‘Evolution’ is the sixth studio album by Paul Van Dyk in eighteen years. If you are wondering what makes a DJ a Grammy winner, you do not need to look any further; ‘Evolution’ by Paul Van Dyk will give you the answer.
