About BarcelonaBarcelona is a huge part of Austin’s nightlife. Highly favored by Austin’s substantial hipster crowd, Barcelona hosts some of the greatest dance parties on a weekly basis in its trendy underground location. Bringing in performances by world-renown DJ’s while also serving as home to local talented spinners has placed Barcelona at the top of the 6th Street must-stop list. “A dungeon like appearance and dim lights” greet patrons as they descend into this Downtown basement nightclub that feels like it’s “in Europe”, particularly when the Sunday night dubstep DJs bring the “beats down low”; naysayers bemoan the “loud, loud, loud” music, still it’s a “rockin'” place to get “nitty gritty on the dance floor” – even if it might not work for the “claustrophobic.
Barcelona is something of an anomaly in Austin, which might help explain why it has been around for so damn long. While plenty of other nightclubs have had the chance to put an iron fist like grip on 6th street, and squeeze the cash from drunk patrons like it were going out of style, Barcelona seems content to keep doing what it does, undeterred by silly trends or the influence of hipsters. The hipster immunity has proven to be something that you will either love or hate, depending on what side of the hipster spectrum you fall on, but you must admire their commitment to their idea of a good time. And that idea is namely this; good cheap drinks, and music so loud that your sternum reverberates. It also doesn’t hurt that the nightclub has a solid reputation with younger crowds as being a hot hookup locale.
All of this of course is set in the club’s literal underground setting, which itself is throwback to a time when Europop, and Euro Dance trends were making the American night scene look silly. Barcelona took a page from this and made sure that you feel like you are descending in a European night spot with the dimly lit staircase that serves as the entrance to the even more dimly lit underground nightclub. So it’s probably fitting that Barcelona has played host to a large number of underground hip hop, and dubstep shows over the last few years. Even hosting a healthy amount of hip hop performers’ off dates when SXSW comes through town. So if you aren’t brought in by the allure of dancing your ass off in a sweaty dim, underground nightclub with cheap drinks, you should definitely check it out for the never ending supply of legit talent that likes to perform at Barcelona.
