About Roseland BallroomThe Roseland Ballroom was once an ice skating rink that was later converted into a seated hall and theater for musical shows and events. It opened originally on the 51st Street in 1919 as a whites-only hall and evolved quickly into a multipurpose venue for ballroom dancing, competitions, weddings, and exhibitions. Mr. Brecker operated the club until 1977, and later Nancy Brecker Leeds, his daughter, took over the management.
In its former days, the Ballroom featured jitterbugging, dance marathons and jazz. It has the reputation of a romantic club. Over 700 plaques on its walls commemorate married couples who first saw each other here.
Later in 1956, the area got the reputation of a disco nightclub. There were some controversies regarding a homicide and a kidnapping, but the dance parties continued. It was shut down in 1990, and later the ballroom maintained its popularity by inviting A-list performers. Some names associated with the Roseland Concert Hall are Madonna, Nirvana, Beyonce, Ke$ha, Tiësto, and Radiohead.
The place has also been visited by dancers such as Joan Crawford, Arthur Murray, Fred Astaire, and Ray Bolger. The Rolling Stones and Ozzie Nelson have also played here.
